Cumbria nuclear power station plan goes ahead with Toshiba deal
Toshiba has announced a deal which gives it a controlling stake in the nuclear energy developer NuGen which is planning to build three nuclear reactors in Cumbria.
By taking a 60% stake in NuGeneration, Toshiba is effectively on course to build the largest single power plant construction project proposed aanywhere in Europe.
The three reactors which are to be built at Moorside near Sellafield will use Toshiba company Westinghouse’s AP1000 reactors with work planned to start as early as 2018 with each build taking four years.
The reactors when fully operational will deliver around 7% of the UK’s energy requirements after they come online in 2024.
Westinghouse President and CEO Danny Roderick added: “Westinghouse is delighted that Europe’s largest AP1000 nuclear plant project to date will be constructed in the UK, which already is home to one of our largest global operations.”
